Caring for a kid, while looking after yourself

...is not easy! I've had a cold since Sunday, yesterday being the worst. Congested, tired, sinus pain... The works. Unfortunately I can't take cold medication while breast feeding so I'm stuck with advil, saline solution and the 'ol steam in a bowl method.

Hence- why I haven't posted lately.

Hopefully Kason stays cold free and I get better soon- altho now the cold has moved into my lungs with a cough. Last night while feeding kason we started crying whenever I coughed! I wanted to cry too- mostly cause he wouldn't go back to sleep!

Rest would help me get better faster... Too bad a nursing new mom can't take medication or rest... Kind of unfair. But worth it for that cute little bugger.

Hopefully I will leave the house soon and get some good pictures of Kason!

Great video

http://bit.ly/UlGmJ9

This video made me tear up, how much a mom wants to make her son happy.

Kelly and I would do the same thing.

Yesterday we were holding Kason and I couldn't find the words to express how much I love him, then Kelly articulated it perfectly...
"I just want to eat him up".

Toys!

Kason is really getting into his toys! It is difficult to get a good picture of him playing though!

He doesn't play shy!

One of my fave things about Kase is that he never plays strange with others! And with that super smiley face he is a favorite of our friends when we are out.

Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child

I have been reading a great book called "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child' by Dr. Mark Weissbluth.  The pricipals are
a) early to bed = better sleep
b) sleep begets sleep - meaning lots of naps mean a better nightime sleep
c) stick to a routine for bedtime (bath, lotions, book/song, bottle, rocking for a limited time)

We have also been following some great advice we got "WHATEVER YOU THINK IS RIGHT" which is very reassuring to hear.

Since Kason was born, we have practiced not picking him up when he cries (not to eat) in his crib, and trying to put him down a few times while he is not fully asleep.  Kason has always been such a calm baby and didn't need too much attention when he was upset.  That might stem from the fact that we did not overly hold him since he was born... something which I often have second thoughts about now that he is so much bigger.  When I see moms of newborns, I often miss holding that cute 9 lb baby all curled up and sleeping on your chest.

nonetheless, it has paid off and Kason had been going to bed at 830, sleeping until 2 and eating at 2 and 5.  Then, last week he woke up at 4 but didn't want to eat - after my lovely husband got up and rocked him to sleep after about 15 mins of crying - Kason slept for another 3 hours.  We knew that he didn't need to eat twice a night.  so for the next week when he woke up we rocked him back to sleep.  3 nights ago when he woke up we decided not to rock him.  I went in after 7, 10 and 15 mins of crying and calmed him but did not take him out of the crib.  After an hour of crying (at 4:30 in the morning did I mention) he calmed himself to sleep, and slept until 630am.

Then the following night, he woke up for his 3am 'snack' then did not wake up again until 630am.

Last night... drumroll please... We put Kason down at about 810pm (earlier bedtime) - he had a good day of napping and he slept for 8 full hours!  He did wake up once or twice and calmed himself down and back to sleep - I didn't go in to his room.  After his 4am snack - he slept until 730am.

When he wakes up - happy, smiling, giggling!  Healthy sleep does mean a happy child!  And he doesn't hate me when I have to put him down and he cries!

Quite a lot to learn as a new mom!  Still lots to go, I know.  Next challenge will be feeding solids and teething!

Going for a walk

The weather might be chilly but that doesn't stop us from going for a walk.  In fact - we are looking for excuses to put Kason in this amazing hat!  Kelly obviously loves it...

Busy little boy

Between watching football games with dad, playing in his jolly jumper, and going for some nice walks, kason is a busy guy! Keeping mummy busy too, only I don't get 14-16 hours of sleep a day! I wish!

Growing too fast!

So cute!

Deadly weapons

Adults only night

The time came where I needed to get some adult time. Not that kason has been bad or anything, but I realized all I had to talk about was poop and young and the restless.
Gramma drake to the rescue.
As we went out for drinks with our friends we talked about many things... Not poop and Y&R.

And yes- we checked our phones to see if gramma called, but didn't call home to check in once. And he was a super good boy and gramma got to stare at him sleeping on the video monitor all night.
Win-win

Back to full time mommy mode

Kelly went off to work at 8am and Kason woke up! We had a fussy day with short naps. I had forgotten what the days are like - looking for things to do during the day, getting out of the house because Kason and I are going crazy!
I already miss Kel and my daily breaks!

Oh well- this cutie sure makes it worth it!

Walking with gramma

We enjoyed Kelly's last day before he goes back to work going for a walk in labarrier park!

Kason sure loves his new carrier. He spent the first half of the walk staring at trees, and the second half snoozing!

I'm back to full time mommy mode and I'm definately going to miss Kelly. Not only because I have enjoyed being able to shower or go for a run whenever I could, but just spending time together as a family. I look forward to our evenings and weekends together!

Have fun back at work Kel! We will miss u!

At Dorothy Lake

We had fun with Michelle and Anonh and the Di Nella family at her cabin this weekend! We ate good-all thanks to our hosts! We went for a hike twice and kason had some hard naps!
Check out his swimsuit!

We spent the weekend with a 5 month old, an 8 month old, a 3 year old, two 4 year olds and an 8 year old! Needless to say we absorbed everything!!

Enjoy the pics!
