Happy Halloween!

Family

This weekend was all about family. We were all reminded about the amazing power that a child can have in bringing family together.
I think all of us can think of situations in our families where we have fallen out if touch or simply could not let go... But bringing Kason into our worlds has changed all that.

Maybe because he is just such a special boy. He brings out the best in people. He certainly brings out the best in Kelly and I. He makes us want to be better people, not only for him but for each other and for our family members. We can all be better people and it is ok that it took Kason to make us all realize this.

So don't forget about family, and let go of any grudges or heartache that has been held on to. Because- one smile from our boy will melt away all of those issues and remind you of what is important in your lives.

Our little family and our extended family. And the little man named Kason who never fails to put a smile on someone's face

Kason's Baptism

Kason was baptised on Sunday October 28th at Charleswood United Church.  We had so much family in visiting.  We were so lucky to have my dad here to be able to perform the baptism for Kason.

We got to see lots of family over the weekend - but Kason was certainly the star of the show!!

Kelly and I both are left with an overwhelming feeling after the baptism and spending time with our family!  We are so blessed to have such a good boy in Kason and we are feeling like real parents starting Kason on this first step in his spiritual journey, whatever path he chooses.

Roots of Empathy

Kason and I are taking part in a program at Madeleine's school called ROOTS OF EMPATHY
Check out the website:http://www.rootsofempathy.org/en/

It's a program that introduces young school children to infants and their development as well as how to treat them respectfully.

Listening to the grade 1 students define empathy was really quite amazing- I don't think I learned about empathy until I was in University!

Of course- Kason pooped out of his outfit as we were walking in- so we were late. I'm not sure how the teacher described that to the kids!

When we got there they sang a lovely welcome song and I walked Kason around the room. The kids have been
Taught the places they can touch Kason on his clothing and if they are not feeling well to not touch him at all.

They asked me many questions about kason's development and what he can do. When they asked if Kason could sit up I said 'yes, for a few seconds it when I demonstrated he sat up for over 2 minutes! The kids liked that. Of course he smiled at the kids.

They weighed and measured him and they had made predictions on how he had grown from the pictures I shared.

At the end, they sang a goodbye song and as I walked around, more kids were comfortable touching him and they loved to tickle his toes!

We will be going back to the school monthly.

What a fantastic program. The instructor was saying it is great god schools that have low income households, lots of single parent families because it teaches the kids How to be respectful.

They said it is especially great if a dad comes because many kids are living away or without a dad in this school.

We are so grateful to be a part of this program! The kids are going to watch Kason grow into a little boy!

New tricks!

This week Kason has tried rice cereal. It's pretty comical watching him spit it right back out at me. Everyday though he takes a little bit more.

Kason is also trying to sit up. Trying is the word, because the poor guy usually just falls forward or to the side. But he is pretty good at it and soon I'm sure he will be sitting up on his own for longer periods of time.

New things keep happening fast with Kason... I feel like it is going to be this way for the rest of our lives!

Mom's best friends

I'm learning so much about getting around with a baby! There are so many barriers that I had never considered before. Not to mention challenges that come from lack of sleep and coordination as well. So I thought I would document the things that I have found life saving these last few months:

1) drive thu's
For some reason I always thought it was lazy to go through a drive thru- now I just know how convenient it is. The unfortunate thing is that some of my favourite places do not have drive thru's. if subway or pita pit had one I would be eternally grateful. Not only because you don't want to lug your baby inside, but because if your baby is having a much needed 'car nap' there is nothing your would do to interrupt that.
I have scoped out all the Starbucks with drive thru's and McDonald's and timmies has had more business of mine then I would like purely because if convenience.
2) handicap doors
It is amazing how many places do not have a handicap door opener... Especially in the states. While sometimes there is that Good Samaritan who will hold open the door for you and your stroller, there are definitely more people in this world who feel they don't have the time to hold open the door for a mommy. This means struggling through a door with your stiller. *note* I will always hold the door for someone- especially those with strollers, I hope you will too!
3) full serve gas stations
Thank you Co-Op! Many gas stations have decided to go to self serve only- likely saving them tons in labor- but losing my business. Again- not wanting to ruin that car nap or simply lug your baby inside. Pay at the pump is ok- but still a challenge when you have a fussy baby.
4) family washrooms
Imagine- trying to take a much needed pee in a regular single stall will your stroller... Impossible. Even worse- the car seat on the floor... Disgusting!
Those large bathrooms with changing stations and even breast feeding rooms are so amazing! You would be amazed how many places do not have these washrooms but should!!!
5) tassimo ;)
Jut because I can make a cup of coffee while holding my babe in 25 seconds... Amazingly awesome!

Swimming

This weekend we went to Grand Forks for a day of shopping!  We stayed overnight and took Kason swimming for his second time (first was at Pan Am Pool earlier in the week).  Looks like we have a true Loewen because he loves the water.  You can see him enjoying the water splashing and the sound it makes.
Swimming lessons start as early at 6 months, I guess I should sign him up...
he will be a better swimmer than me before he is 1 years old!  I should learn to jump in the water without plugging my nose before he gets too big!

Are we seeing a resemblance?

Now that Kason is back to packin on the pounds, his chubby cheeks are looking closely to Kelly when he was a baby!  We are thinking Kason is going to be a little image of Daddy...

Kason in his jolly jumper!

The top 4 things you need as a mom in 2012:

I will admit- I read many books and websites about pregnancy and labor but when Kason came- I realized I hadn't read any books about how to raise a child. And who has time when you have a newborn. Now I have the time with kason napping and way more interested in his toys then crying or fussing ( thank god) so I thought I would share what I learned about how to survive as a mom- while I am trying to survive raising kason!!

1) your smartphone
Sure- we have seen people texting while driving, walking with their heads buried in their phones and worse. I'm not suggesting new moms become delinquent while on their phones but from the day kason was born- my IPhone became more important to me than ever before.
Firstly- it's nice to have a camera on hand at all times, easy to turn on and capture that cute moment that I might have never while trying to dig my camera out of the diaper bag
Secondly-while breastfeeding is a beautiful thing and an excellent opportunity to bond with your child, when you are doing it 10-12 times a day in the beginning, once or twice it is bound to get a tad boring.  And now that Kason is older and very easily distracted, it is difficult for him to eat with the TV on, and don't even think about having a conversation with me.  He wants to be a part of it.  So, the phone becomes my friend, especially in the wee hours of the night when I don't even turn the lights on!

2) your PVR
Back to the first month when we were up every 2 hours to eat.  I will tell you, there is NOTHING on TV in the middle of the night worth watching.  Sure, I watched that steam mop informercial, but I would only do that once. (kelly talked me out of buying it too!$   So I would PVR any show I thought was interesting during the day, and watch it in the middle of the night while I was up with Kason.  Back then he was up for 45 minutes eating then falling asleep (now it's about 16 minutes).  my PVR is a lifesaver still today. It's pretty difficult to watch a show I have been waiting for when your kid needs something.  Kelly can pause the sunday night football game and put Kason to bed without missing a single play.  Not that TV is more important than our child, on the contrary - we can continue living our regular lives and enjoy Kason to the fullest!

3) an eyemask
If you are like Kelly- a serial napper- then this does not apply to you.  If you are like me, napping does not come so naturally.  I learned very early that this was a detriment to my health.  My eyemask made it easy to nap during the day or just tone out the world for a little while when Kason naps.  Now when Kason goes for his 9am nap I can get some real shut eye!

4) and lastly, you need your local Starbucks! Whether its for that little 'pick me up' you need to get through the day, or an opportunity to get out and talk to someone not in your singsongy, cooing voice.
Starbucks are actually quite baby friendly- although I have yet to find one with a handicap door, which is a 'mom with a strollers' best friend.
* this one is much to Kelly's chagrin.

So there u have it. That's all I learned
In the last 5 months! Jk! I also learned that this guy is super cute and Kelly and I don't know how we survived without him in our lives!
Have a great day!!

Another walk in the park

Another beautiful day, another walk with Kason! This time, we went to Assiniboine Park with Jana and her little Ryleigh who is almost 1 year old! Future friends...
